Thobeka is a 46 year old woman living in Langa, near Cape Town, South Africa. She moved from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town in order to be closer to her husband who works as a labourer for a construction company in the Cape Town area. Despite her husband’s wages however, the family still struggled to pay the bills. In 1995 Thobeka had the idea to start a fruit selling business to contribute to the family income. She started selling as people go to and from work as this generates the most business volume. Recently, Thobeka has also added meat to her merchandise as a result of a loan from Tetla Financial Solutions.
Thobeka’s business helps supports three children alongside her husband’s wages. Since first becoming a borrower in 2008, Thobeka has received and repaid in full two loans for R900 (CAD 130) and R1, 300 (CAD 185) and is now repaying the third loan of R1, 700 (CAD 243). The total investment she has made through Tetla’s loans is R 3,900 (CAD 568), which seems like a small amount in comparison to the impact it has had on Thobeka’s life.
Thobeka’s dream is to keep growing her business so that she can increase her income and save enough money to send both of her children to college for post high school qualifications. She now believes this dream may become reality.
